Capillary Action
- Imagine a dry sponge being submerged into water. The porous holes in the sponge contain air spaces (capillaries).
The sponge's holes fill with water and act as a mechanism to keep the sponge moist. This phenomenon is often called
"capillary action".
A similar phenomenon occurs in concrete and masonry walls/slab floors. Capillary action is a function of the natural
attraction between water and the capillaries found in concrete and masonry.
